Having an efficient HVAC system provides homeowners with more than just comfort

Your heating and cooling system is important for reasons beyond just having the "right" temperature in your home.

In fact, there are several benefits to having an efficient and functional HVAC system said Jennifer Dunsmoor, Community Relations for Oosterveld Heating & Air Conditioning in Guelph.

An efficient HVAC system will keep humidity and moisture levels consistent, helping to prevent damage that excess humidity may cause, Dunsmoor said. This includes the potential to damage your furniture, paint, and if it settles in your floors or walls, can even cause structural damage over time.

Another benefit of maintaining a consistent level of humidity in your home is to avoid high humidity that can create mold and mildew damage. Not to mention, dust-mites thrive in humid temperatures. These conditions can aggravate allergy and asthma sufferers, and is potentially harmful for anyone breathing in this type of air over time.

When it comes to air conditioning, Dunsmoor said, “While everyone likes to be comfortable, the benefits to having central air conditioning in the home go beyond the cooling and comfort level that you will receive in the hot, humid weather.”

Central air conditioning can help to get air flow moving throughout the home which helps prevent mold spores and dust. And while there are people who are fine without it, those with medical and other conditions require a comfortable temperature for optimal health.

Whether you’re using your air conditioner or furnace, Dunsmoor said the best way to combat excess humidity is by having proper ventilation, optimal air flow and air quality in your home. This can be achieved with an efficient HVAC system, and one that has an air purifier as part of that system can also help.

Dunsmoor said they always have specials, bundle packs, and programs and incentives available for those who want to replace or upgrade their HVAC system. While it can be costly, and some are concerned with energy-savings and budget, Dunsmoor explains that having the right equipment is an investment in value that will save you money over time.

“You’re going to pay for it once and it’s going to last,” she said, “and with the quality and efficiency, over time you’re going to pay a lot less,” adding that it costs more energy to run inefficient heating and cooling systems.

Tips for maintaining your HVAC system

1. The importance of changing the air filter.

Regular changing of your air filters is key to maintaining proper air quality and functioning of you HVAC system. Depending on your lifestyle, for example, how many people or pets live in your home, those with allergies etc., they recommend every eight to 12 weeks. At minimum, twice a year when you change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

2. Having your equipment properly maintained

To ensure your furnace or air conditioner is running efficiently and safely, it’s recommended to have your air conditioner checked in the spring and your furnace in the fall. Visit Oosterveld’s Maintenance Program to learn more.

3. Making the investment of replacement for safety and energy-savings

An outdated and improperly maintained HVAC system can be unsafe and equals a higher cost to run. Basically, you’ll be paying more for less efficiency. If energy-savings is a concern, Dunsmoor suggests getting a smart thermometer. It can be programmed for individual use and needs, and the temperature can be adjusted from your smart phone.
