There’s a saying that word-of-mouth is the best advertiser.

For Mike Swan of Swan Moving and Storage, his endorsements are three-generations (or more) deep from Guelph, Kitchener Waterloo and Cambridge residents. The people he moved back in the early 1970s as singles, grew up into the parents who he then moved into a new home with their young families. Today, they’re grandparents and he’s now moving their grandchildren.

“I’ve seen people go through the different stages of their life and I’m here to help them move onto the next stage,” he says. He’s noticed that in the past, people typically moved a couple of times over their entire life but today’s millennial generation is more mobile.

“This mobility factor is what is driving the household trade,” he says. “People are more mobile now than our parent’s generation and the young, modern person moves frequently.”

Mike and his team of 20 employees are ready to handle any kind of move – residential or commercial. Based in Guelph, he primarily services Guelph, Kitchener Waterloo and Cambridge but is no stranger to Milton, Fergus and Georgetown. He’s come a long way, literally and figuratively, since he first started in the moving industry as a University of Guelph student. After graduation, Mike focused on this moving and storage trade.

“We’ll get you wherever it is that you need to go,” says Mike, adding that they’re not limited to just southwestern Ontario.

Swan Moving also offers professional packing services, heated storage, sells moving supplies plus rents dollies and other equipment.

Some things that don’t change are prime times in moving, especially the last few days of a month when a lease is up. He likes to say that they cover A to Z with TLC.

“A client is wise to book early when it comes to a month-end date,” he says, adding that the earlier the better but definitely two or three weeks in advance. Free, no-obligation estimates are available in person, over the phone or via a link on their website.

Chances are when you do call, you’ll be speaking to Nicole Roadknight, his daughter, who is Swan’s Operations Manager.

“It is typically the lady-of-the-house who makes the moving decisions,” he explains. “She is the one who is organizing it and speaking to my daughter as operations manager helps with this buying decision.”

Mike says he appreciates the support the Guelph community, and beyond, has given his business. He is a firm believer in helping those who help others.

“My business philosophy is to be a good corporate citizen,” he says.

Over the years, Mike has past or presently supports Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Edward Johnson Music Society, Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis, Guelph Youth Singers, Guelph Youth Music Centre, Elliot Community Seniors Home, Rotary Club of Guelph South, Salvation Army, Guelph Drop-In Centre and Hillside Folk Festival.

“I am somebody who has a roof over my head and a warm house so I want to help charities that actually help people like the Foodbank, Drop-in centre, Salvation Army or Women-in Crisis,” he says. “I want to help those who do good in our community.”

As a good customer service endorsement, Swan Moving keeps on paying it forward.
