Griefwalk is a local, not-for-profit service that has been providing support to people dealing with various forms of loss in our community for the last 13 years.

Griefwalk helps individuals facing many different types of loss including widow/partner bereavement loss, loss through drug overdose, loss of a child, infancy and pregnancy loss and loss as a result of suicide, through both one-on-one and group counselling sessions that are free of charge.

“In the early days, it served about 30 to 40 people a year,” said Glen Gordon, one of the organizers for the event. “Those numbers have tripled since COVID-19 and Griefwalk now provides service to over 300 people per year.”

Currently, the program has over 27 trained volunteers and 3 and fully certified counsellors/therapists offering these services.

Fundraising efforts such as the Golf for Griefwalk event, now in its second year, help to cover the cost of offering and expanding these types of support services.

The golf tournament takes place at Springfield Golf and Country Club on Friday, Sept. 15. The cost is $185 for individual registration and $740 for a foursome.

Registration fees include golf and cart, barbecue lunch prior to start (hot dog/burger, snack and beverage), full dinner and a swag bag.

The event will also feature fun competition holes, brought to you by Griefwalk’s valued community partners, listed here, as well as a putting contest. There will also be prizes, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw.

The first year was great fun, said Glen, and saw over 60 participants get together to raise funds in support of those navigating life’s most challenging losses. This year is slated to be a great success, with close to100 participants already registered.

“We’ve been quite successful in rallying community support for this event,” said Glen.

There is still time to sign up so you can help make an impact too!
