Centre Wellington is looking for new wells to satisfy the the growing township's demand for water.

Currently, Fergus and Elora's water supply comes from nine groundwater wells — six in Fergus and three in Elora.

The township's 2019 Water Supply Master Plan calls for additional well sites to supplement the existing supply of water and accommodate population and employment growth to 2041.

In twenty years, Centre Wellington is expected to be home to 52,000 people, up from the 28,000 counted in the latest census in 2016.

At Monday's meeting, council unanimously agreed to award the tender for a new well exploration program to Stantec Consulting Ltd.

As part of the project, the company will identify, test and confirm suitable drilling sites for new wells. It will also be responsible for preparing an implementation strategy and a high-level cost estimate for their construction and connection to the township's existing water supply network.
