FERGUS – A new restaurant is headed for the Centre Wellington Sportsplex's concession booth.

Approved during a Centre Wellington council meeting last week, the township manager of recreation facilities Matt Tucker said while the original concession stand initially closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, its window remained shut due to "financial implications" and a lack of interested vendors.

When a renewed interest in the booth on social media encouraged the Sportsplex to try again, Tucker said they were thrilled to hear they'd received two applications ‒ selecting Somthin' Fishee, a fish and chips restaurant based in Elora.

Other vendors will have a chance to apply for the spot in two years.

But managing director of community services Pat Newsom warned that if the business fails, township staff will have to look at "closing the booth for good" and consider other options for the space.

There isn't enough activity at the Elora Jefferson Centre to open a concession booth, said Tucker when asked by council.
