The first phase of the St. David Street North reconstruction has begun.

FERGUS – Residents living in the north end of town may experience discoloured water due to a watermain break on St. David Street North.

The township of Centre Wellington posted on its official Facebook page Thursday evening and Friday morning to notify residents a watermain was hit and broken during the first phase of the St. David Street North reconstruction.

There is no timeline for when the break will be fixed.

St. David Street North from St. Andrew Street West to Garafraxa Street was closed to traffic earlier this week to facilitate the construction of new infrastructure and traffic calming measures, intersection upgrades, a pedestrian crossing and bike lanes.

Construction is expected to last until mid-December.

The notice said the break is likely to cause discoloured water throughout the north end of Fergus.

If you experience discoloured water, the township said to turn on a cold water tap closest to the water metre and let the water flush slowly until it runs clear.

If the water still appears discoloured after 24 hours, residents are encouraged to call the town office.
