'Unintentional exposure to illicit drugs' blamed in Cambridge child's death

Police have charged a 27-year-old woman in connection with the death of a 15-month-old boy last September

A Cambridge woman has been arrested in relation to the death of a child last September.

On Sept. 26 around 9:40 p.m., emergency services responded to a residence on King Street East in Cambridge for a medical call involving a 15-month-old boy in distress.

Upon arrival, the child was located unresponsive and was rushed to hospital. The child was pronounced deceased a short time later.

As a result of the information gathered, a criminal investigation commenced. Through investigation, the child’s death was determined to have been caused by an unintentional exposure to illicit drugs.

On Tuesday police arrested a 27-year-old Cambridge woman in relation to the death of the child. She was charged with: 

  • Manslaughter
  • Failing to provide the necessaries of life
  • Possession of an unauthorized weapon
  • Possession of a controlled substance

The accused was held in police custody for a bail hearing.

The accused and victim were related.

This is the fourth death of a child involving unintentional exposure to illicit drugs in the past four years, police report.
