The Guelph Longo's on Clair Road is now making it mandatory for its customers to wear a mask or face covering.

The family-owned grocery store chain informed customers on Friday via email and the new policy went into effect on Monday.

"As a family business, our number one priority is the health and safety of our Team Members and Guests," said the email from Longo's president and CEO Anthony Longo.

"While our Wellness Screening program will continue, we will be making some changes. Effective May 4th, 2020, all Guests will be required to wear a mask or face covering while in our stores. This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2. If you are not able to wear a mask or face covering, please speak with a manager so we can accommodate you."

The chain had previously implemented a policy that saw customers having their temparatures checked by a digital thermometer as they entered the store. That policy has been ended.

"Team Members and Suppliers will also continue to have Wellness Screenings, including contactless temperature checks and are required to wear a mask or face covering in store," said the email.

"We ask that you please bring a mask or face covering that covers your mouth and nose with you when you shop. Masks are also available for purchase in-store. Should you require assistance please speak with a Team Member at the store entrance."

Longo's is the first Guelph grocery store to announce such a move.

Masks have been made mandatory at Costco stores in the United States but not yet in Canada.
