LETTER: 15 years later, the library message remains the same ...

Reader Bill Barrett sends a letter about the library that he wrote 15 years ago

GuelphToday received the following letter from Bill Barrett regarding a new main library

Dear Editor

Well, here’s a blast from the past! I dug up this letter I sent to the local print media back in 2005 about the “new” library plan. Some of the context has changed, the opportunity for the old post office long gone, but I think the message is still resonant. Let’s hope our city leaders can find the light switch this time …

"A storybook from my childhood came to mind while brooding over the fate of our public library.

A wealthy nobleman built a huge mansion but neglected to include windows or other means of indoor lighting.  He had his own idea. His plan was to have hundreds of footmen with large polished gold plates run in and out of the building carrying the reflection from the sun into his domain. Alas, the wealthy nobleman lived out his years in darkness.

These days our noble civic leadership finds itself in a dark windowless place. The library is a case in point.

Despite the thousands of dollars spent on illuminating studies for the library location, despite the brilliant timing of the availability of the former Post Office for our new library, despite the enlightened leadership from hundreds of local library supporters – except for a few sparks – darkness prevails at Guelph City Council.

Does anyone out there know where the light switch is for the council chamber?"
