Aidan Kee to be sentenced Aug. 30 in manslaughter conviction

Victim impact statements and sentencing submissions will be made Aug. 19

A Guelph man found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Nick Tanti will learn his punishment at the end of August.

Aidan Kee will be sentenced at a hearing on Aug. 30 at 2:15 p.m. in Guelph Superior Court.

The sentence for manslaughter ranges from a suspended sentence to a life sentence.

Both the Crown and defense had the opportunity to speak to Justice Gordon Lemon Tuesday, on what they believe were the factual findings in the case by the 12-person jury.

Discussions by the jury are protected, and are not released to the public.

The jury deliberated for the better part of two days, beginning Monday afternoon. A verdict was reached early Tuesday evening, reducing Aidan's charge of second-degree murder to manslaughter.

"Justice Lemon will take time to decide what facts were sort of implied, and have to be made in this case, which ones he can make," said Crown attorney Tom Meehan. "He'll rule on that in August."

Aidan is out on bail until he is sentenced. But some conditions he had before Tuesday's verdict have been relieved, most notably the clause forbidding Aidan having contact with his brother Angus.

Angus was acquitted of accessory after the fact murder on Tuesday.

Other bail conditions include a ban on possessing weapons, not travelling outside Ontario, applying for a passport or other travel documents or speaking to any of the witnesses in the case.

"We're satisfied, and Justice Lemon and parties are satisfied that it's appropriate bail to protect the public, and to make sure he comes to court," Meehan said. "He hasn't missed court. He hasn't breached his bail.

"A very serious charge that he's been found guilty of. But on balance, (the) Crown has a duty to agree to reasonable bail and we've done that."

Sentencing submissions are scheduled for Aug. 19. There will also be victim impact statements before sentencing.
