The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) will continue to protect animals at risk over the next six months while the Ontario Government develops a new animal protection act. GHS is proud to continue their vital provincial animal protection work within the Guelph and Wellington County area (now including the Town of Erin).
In March, the Ontario SPCA (OSPCA) announced it will not be enforcing the cruelty provisions in provincial legislation after today.
To ensure that no animal falls through the cracks, the Government passed Bill 117 and announced that willing Humane Societies, such as GHS, along with their Provincial Inspectors will continue to enforce the law while the Province develops a new animal welfare model. “This is a huge relief for animals in our community,” says Adrienne McBride, executive director of the Guelph Humane Society, “Locally, this means that our Provincial Inspectors can continue enforcement and investigation duties in Guelph and the Wellington County area. Our team already has established relationships with veterinarians, justice, health and social services, and police, as well as the expertise necessary to protect animals.”
In addition to enforcement, GHS Provincial Inspectors will continue to educate owners about standards of care and link vulnerable pets and their families to available resources. Last year, GHS’s Provincial Inspection team investigated approximately 350 concerns about animals in the community.
