The annual Mayor’s Tree Lighting ceremony has been called off this year in light of the pandemic and restrictions on the size of social gatherings.

“It’s a real disappointment,” Mayor Cam Guthrie told GuelphToday. “It’s certainly something I look forward to every year.”

The event in Market Square, in front of city hall, traditionally includes live music and other entertainment geared toward the whole family, as well as a sing-along and free hot chocolate, in addition to charity fundraising efforts.

“Although we can’t gather, I’d ask everyone to still pick a local charity in need during this season and support them,” Guthrie said.

Though there won’t be a ceremony to flip the switch, plans still call for lights on the evergreen tree in Market Square.
