Correction: The original article incorrectly stated the date of the committee of adjustment hearing. The hearing is set for May 13, beginning at 4 p.m.

A former auto shop in the Ward may soon be split up and converted into space for a trio of businesses. An application is heading to the city’s committee of adjustment next week that could see the permitted uses change for 60 Ontario St.

Watir Holdings Corp. proposes to turn the 150 square metre commercial building, found on a triangle-shaped lot at the intersection with Arthur Street South, into a barber shop, coffee shop and convenience store.

In order to do so, it’s seeking a pair of minor zoning variances: one that allows those types of businesses on the site – a coffee shop is considered a take-out restaurant – and another that eliminates the requirement for off-street parking.

Under existing regulations, the proposal would need to have 11 off-street parking spaces, notes a city staff report.

The committee is set to make a decision on the requests during a May 13 meeting, which begins at 4 p.m. and will be streamed live at guelph.ca/live.

The deadline to register as a delegate or submit written comments to the committee is noon on the day of the hearing, though any submissions made after noon on May 6 will not be handed out in advance.
