NEWS RELEASE

WELLINGTON CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

*************************
Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) is Walking Forward Together in faith during Catholic Education Week from Apr. 30-May 5, 2017. Schools across the board will be hosting evening events, liturgies, and guest speakers to celebrate growing and learning together.

WCDSB offers innovative, faith-based education to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate and share the values that form and contribute to the success of our Catholic schools: faith, family, community, caring for creation and living with hope while walking through life with God.

While celebrating Catholic Education Week (an annual event organized provincially by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association), WCDSB students will be living out the 2017 theme of Walking Forward Together. Some of the content that WCDSB students will be learning throughout the week can be found here.

One specific—and literal—example of how WCDSB students embody these values is last February’s Polar Bear Walk. Organized by Sean Hutton, a Grade 6 student at Holy Trinity Catholic School (he was in Grade 2 when he founded this now national event), Sean built local and national awareness about global warming and its effects on the polar bear population. This year over 100 students, staff, Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie and MP Lloyd Longfield walked alongside one another to raise awareness about the extinction of polar bears.

During Catholic Education Week, WCDSB encourages families in Guelph and Wellington to consider calling their local Catholic school to learn more about the engaging educational opportunities happening every day at WCDSB’s elementary and secondary schools.

Throughout the week, WCDSB will be sharing stories about the impact Catholic education is making in our community on Twitter @WellingtonCath. Families are invited to celebrate Catholic Education Week using the hashtags #CEW2017, #HereIAm and #WhatWCDSBDoes.
