FERGUS – Chess players looking to put their skills to the test by trying to checkmate one of the country’s best players have their chance in Fergus soon.

Mark Plotkin, an international master, will be coming to Fergus for a simultaneous chess exhibition. Plotkin is ranked as Canada’s 18th best chess player, based on the International Chess Federation, and is also a chess coach based in Toronto.

On Sept. 9 in front of The Bookery in Downtown Fergus, Plotkin will take on all challengers playing up to 10 games at once.

According to a social media post by The Bookery, the event will be drop-in style and as soon as a board is free a new game will start.

Plotkin will play the same colour in each game and players must wait until he is in front of the board before making a move. When the game is finished, players give up their seat to the next waiting player.

The fee is $5 and takes place on Sept. 9 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the Fergus Steampunk Festival.
