Many Guelphites will be starting October running for a worthy cause.

The 32nd annual Canadian Cancer Society's CIBC Run for the Cure takes place Sunday, with runners setting off from the Old Quebec Street Shoppes in Downtown Guelph.

The event is the biggest single-day, volunteer-led initiative in Canada that supports breast cancer research and support programs.

Guelph is one of 53 communities hosting a run.

Officials say one in eight women are expected to face a diagnosis in their lifetime, the most diagnosed cancer among women.

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) said it has invested $62.6 million into breast cancer research across Canada in the last five years. It added since breast cancer peaked in 1986, the death rate for Canadians with breast cancer have been nearly cut in half.

"Thanks to our supporters and partners in communities like Guelph, important progress is being made in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer," Tanya Henry, the vice president of signature programs with the CCS, said in a news release.

"Proceeds raised at last year’s run are now supporting researchers to develop an immunotherapy vaccine to treat triple negative breast cancer, one of the most difficult to treat types of breast cancer, and many other promising CCS-funded research projects."

Anyone can participate in the run. Registration is scheduled for 8 a.m., with the opening ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Both the one kilometre and five kilometre runs start at 10 a.m.

You can visit the Canadian Cancer Society website for more details on how to register, and view the routes for both runs.
