Guelph has passed another COVID-19 vaccination milestone as the region hit 90 per cent of eligible citizens having received at least one dose.

The announcement of the milestone mark came Tuesday night.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health data shows that while 90 per cent of people in Guelph have received at least one dose, the number of fully vaccinated people isn’t far behind with data from Wednesday showing 84.2 per cent of Guelphites are fully vaccinated.

An emailed quote from WDGPH attributed to Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, associate medical officer of health for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health said:

“Yesterday marks a significant milestone in the fight against COVID-19 in Guelph. With 90 per cent of eligible residents now vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, Guelph is now one of the most vaccinated cities in Ontario and in North America. This achievement is a shared one. Without the dedication of partners across the city and the willingness of residents to do their part, this progress would not have been possible. The drive to protect every person in Guelph and throughout Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph continues.”

The announcement came one day before Ontario premier Doug Ford announced a province-wide vaccine certificate.

"We can't wait any longer, we must take immediate action and we will," said Ford during the announcement on Wednesday.

Proof of vaccination and a photo ID will be required for high-risk indoor public settings where face coverings cannot always be worn.
