Danby setting aside air conditioners for LTC homes

Nearly 15 per cent of long-term care homes in Ontario are struggling to get air conditioner units in all resident rooms

For the next two weeks, Danby Appliances will be setting aside inventory to address the shortage of air conditioning units in long-term care homes.

The decision comes after recent news that 90 LTC homes across the province are struggling to get air conditioning in all resident rooms. While all 626 homes have fully-conditioned cooling areas, legislation that passed last year requires air conditioning to be in all resident rooms.

The homes that haven’t met this requirement cite supply chain issues, design issues, COVID-19 outbreaks and visitor restrictions as the reasoning behind it.

“Being an Ontario based company we wanted to make sure we did what we could to help,” said Danby CEO Jim Estill in a news release.

Estill noted that for both window air conditioners and portable units, most design issues can be overcome by selecting the right unit that fits the room.

LTC homes can purchase the units from Danby at a “preferred cost."
