Local activists, youth and volunteers will be making their concerns around climate change heard in an upcoming climate strike in Downtown Guelph.

The strike has been put together by youth organization called Greenhouse Guelph in light of a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and is being supported by other environmental groups in Guelph and Wellington County.

On Thursday at noon, participants will gather in St. George’s Square to listen to speakers from eMERGE Guelph, the Wellington Water Watchers and Greenhouse Guelph.

During the event, protesters will be making a series of climate and social justice-based demands, including calling on Guelph to adjust climate change targets.

Guelph’s first interim goal is for 2030, which the release says protesters want to see changed to four-year increments to match with council terms. They also view the 2050 goal as coming too late.

Afterwards, the group may also march to Guelph City Hall, depending on the number of participants.

All those interested in attending the strike are being asked to do a COVID-19 self-assessment before coming to the event, bring a mask and maintain physical distance from others.
