GUELPH/WELLINGTON – An annual event focused on promoting agri-tourism during the fall is returning with an extended format this year.

Instead of a one-day farm and food tour, Taste Real’s Fall Rural Romp has collected virtual and in-person farm experiences for the public to explore over this month.

Christina Mann, Taste Real coordinator, said in a interview this year is less of an open-house style event and more of a campaign to promote the public to learn about local agriculture businesses and what they offer.

There are economic benefits to supporting local farmers but Mann said it's important to also support them as, "stewards of the land around us."

"If they're able to continue working their land and being able to not work two or three different jobs in order to keep their farming component then that's certainly a benefit for the local community as well," Mann said.

Taste Real has highlighted popular fall outings on its website such as local pumpkin patches, apple picking and agri-tourism.

‘Rompers’ can put together their own self-guided tour through an online local food map showcasing the best of the fall harvest from over 50 Wellington County and Guelph farms and businesses.

The public should verify hours and details with businesses directly before visiting as some experiences require advanced booking.

New this year is a treasure hunt, colouring contest and activity kits that can be ordered for free from the Taste Real website.

The website also has virtual activities like cooking classes and farm tours available. Mann said the learning component to the event is critical part of this event as it increases the connection people have with how food is grown and made.

The Fall Rural Romp is on now and runs until Oct. 31.
