Ward 4 resident John Pollard recently announced his intention to run for city council.

The upcoming municipal election may have its first unofficial race.

Ward 4 resident John Pollard recently announced his intent to run for one of his area’s two councillor seats at the council horseshoe. The announcement came via a newly created Twitter account dedicated to his campaign run.

“There’s really no better way to get involved. Frankly, I’m surprised more people don’t put themselves out there,” he said. “Win or lose, it’s a great experience.”

Pollard, who served as a Milton town councillor between 2014 and 2018, moved to Guelph in 2020 after being “priced out” of his former community by home sale values.

Reached for comment on Friday afternoon, Ward 4 incumbent councillor Mike Salisbury said he’s undecided about seeking re-election this fall.

Fellow Ward 4 councillor Christine Billings, who couldn’t be immediately reached, recently told GuelphToday she’s also undecided about running again.

In order to run in the Oct. 24 municipal election, nomination paperwork must be submitted to the city clerk’s office by Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. The nomination window opens on May 2.

Advanced voting will be held Oct. 8 to 10 and 14 to 16.
