A free Earth Day event will take over Market Square this weekend.

The joint effort between the Guelph Wellington Coalition for Social Justice, Emerge Guelph and Greenbelt Promise is meant to put a focus on raising awareness to reduce carbon emissions, and highlighting environmental initiatives taking place.

The local Ontario Public Independent Research Group, Council of Canadians, Water Watchers and The Bookshelf are co-sponsoring the event.

It will feature guest speakers, a spoken word poet, drumming and a children's art table.

The family-friendly event starts at noon on April 22.

Other events around the city include a tree planting and environmental fair with Rotary Forest, a walk hosted by Yorklands Green Hub and an art show hosted by Studio 404.
