GUELPH, ON, - On Saturday August 5, 2018, at approximately 12:10:12 am, the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at 80 Speedvale Ave W.  Units from stations #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6 arrived to find black smoke visible and coming from the fourth floor of the building.

Firefighters performed quick access to the fourth floor to find a working fire in an apartment. An aggressive interior attack brought the fire under control, and was subsequently extinguished.

Fire damage was contained to the apartment but water damage to other units has caused some displacement of occupants till cleanup can be done.

All residents, with the exception of the noted apartments, have been allowed back into the building and have re-occupied their units. Victim Services Wellington is looking after the displaced persons providing shelter for the night.

There were no injuries to firefighting personnel, but an occupant of the apartment was taken to Guelph General Hospital and is being held for observation overnight by doctors.

The cause of the fire along with an estimate of damage is still under investigation. The Guelph Fire Prevention division remains on scene awaiting the arrival of the Fire Marshall to conduct their investigation.

The Guelph Fire Department would like to thank the Guelph Police Service, Guelph Wellington Emergency Medical Services, Victim Services, Canadian Red Cross and City of Guelph Transit division for their assistance on this call.
