Children with respiratory illnesses have been showing up at Guelph General Hospital more frequently as of late.

It's just another wrinkle in the issues plaguing hospitals across Ontario, already struggling with long wait times in emergency rooms.

"While those needing urgent care should come to the (emergency department), there are alternatives for less urgent needs," said Perry Hagerman, spokesperson for Guelph General Hospital, in an email while attaching a link of health care options in the area, including walk-in clinics.

He said if someone is heading to the emergency department, prepare for a long wait and know health care providers will see patients based on need.
