A local woman has received the province’s highest civilian honour for outstanding achievements.

It was announced Friday that 24 new appointments had been made to the Order of Ontario, including Guelph’s Barbara Morrongiello.

Morrongiello is a professor in psychology at the University of Guelph, and an international leader in childhood injury prevention.

Her “novel integrative models and unique prevention programs have shaped the field of public health,” the news release reads.

“Her work serves as a guide for communities and researchers throughout Canada and around the world – measurable reducing risks to children every day. Her mentorship is also preparing the next generation of scholars to advance this vital research.”

Appointments are made on the recommendation of an independent advisory council. Nominations are put forward by the public, and decisions are based on the merit of their accomplishments, the release states.

“With their impressive achievements and outstanding contributions, these individuals represent the best of the best in our great province. Their dedication, drive and lifetime of service is an inspiration to everyone who aspires to build better communities and a stronger Ontario,” said Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michael Ford.

The ceremony for the 2021 Appointees to the Order of Ontario will take place on Nov. 21, 2022, bestowed by Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell.

More than 800 people have been appointed to the order since it was established in 1986.
