Two hopefuls are currently under consideration to represent the People’s Party of Canada for the riding of Guelph, says the local riding association.
Mark Paralovos and Matthew Dobbin have put their names forward for consideration to become the party’s first ever Guelph candidate.
The upstart party was formed in September of 2018 by Maxime Bernier, a current MP and former Conservative party leader hopeful. In 2017, Bernier was the runner-up to Andrew Scheer in a closely contested Conservative leadership contest.
Guelph’s Liberal memebr of parliament Lloyd Longfield has been acclaimed to run again in the fall election, scheduled for Oct. 21, 2019. Steve Dyck will represent the Green Party of Canada.
The Conservative Party and NDP riding associations both expect to have the final selection of candidates sometime in June.
So far, two Conservatives have confirmed they are running in the fall election — Derek Matisz and Dr. Ashish Sachan. A third Conservative hopeful is currently being vetted and is yet to be named, said a spokesperson from that party’s local riding association.
Two NDP candidates are currently being vetted. An NDP spokesperson said the riding association expects to be able to name the candidates in mid-May and a nomination meeting is expected in June.
A vote for the local PPC candidate will occur on May 11 at 1 p.m. in the Birch Room at the Victoria Road Rec Centre. Registered members of the PPC who are living in Guelph will be eligible to vote.
