The Guelph Physics livestream summer series returns Monday July 25 at 7:00 p.m. EDT with a discussion about the James Webb Space Telescope and the first images it has provided!
Our guests are the outreach scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope in Canada, Dr. Nathalie Ouellette, and the Communications Strategy and Canadian Space Policy advisor of the Planetary Society, Kate Howells.
When the first image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope was released to the public on July 11, the internet exploded. Since then, we’ve been exposed to celestial wonder after celestial wonder, from galactic nurseries to spectra showing water on distant exoplanets.
But what does it all mean?
We’re very fortunate to have two experts in the field join us to help us piece together this cosmic puzzle.
Nathalie Ouellette is an astrophysicist, science communicator and lifetime lover of all things space! She obtained her Ph.D. in Physics & Astronomy at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 2016. Her research focuses on galaxy formation and evolution, particularly those found in clusters. Nathalie is currently the coordinator of the Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) at the University of Montréal and is also the outreach scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope in Canada collaborating with the Canadian Space Agency.
Based in Guelph, Kate Howells works to engage the Planetary Society's myriad audiences in the adventure of space exploration. As Canadian Space Policy advisor she guides the Planetary Society's positions on space policy and advocacy in Canada and connects Canadian Planetary Society members with opportunities to advocate for Canadian space science and exploration programs. She is also the author of Space Is Cool As F*** .
