Loblaw has announced it plans to build 30 new stores across the country this year, but isn't saying where just yet.

The Brampton-based company announced Thursday that it will open 30 new locations and renovate 500 existing stores.

Loblaw owns a prime piece of retail real estate in Guelph's east end, at the corner of Watson Road and Starwood Drive, that the city - and east end residents - have been hoping will turn into a grocery store for several years.

It is the only piece of property currently available in the east end for a large grocery store.

"Our investment will create improved retail experiences for customers and local jobs for communities," said Galen G. Weston, Chairman and CEO of Loblaw in a news release.

Loblaw has over 1,100 grocer locations across Canada under various brands.
