New crossing on Gordon Street proves to be convenient for many

A study conducted last summer revealed a large number of people crossing Gordon Street use the Boathouse location to cross

A new crossing on Gordon St. has been in constant use since its installation on Thursday.

Students, children, seniors, individuals with pets and strollers were seen crossing the busy road with ease.

Located north of the Boathouse, the crosswalk is proving to be convenient for many after the City of Guelph paid $60,000 for its installation.

A consultant’s study conducted last summer reported that 43 per cent of people crossing on the stretch of Gordon Street and James Street crossed at the Boathouse entrance.

“We don’t hear the brakes slam down every hour so it’s definitely stopped the traffic,” said worker Alisa Cogan at the Boathouse, who has heard cars routinely push their brakes for jaywalkers crossing the street throughout the day at the busy location.

Cogan faces the crosswalk directly at work and immediately noticed the convenience of it when it was installed.

Taylor Bainbridge who routinely visits Guelph said the crosswalk has proved to be helpful especially for her.

“I would have to go up farther and then back,” said Bainbridge who would have to walk up to the Water St. intersection and walk back with her son in a stroller.

“It's great because I don't like crossing on the main road, I prefer crossing here a lot better.”
