It’s a technological feat that the New Horizons Band in Guelph will be able to perform together while social distancing in an upcoming concert streaming on YouTube.

On May 20, a Spring Live Concert with all three groups from the NHB Guelph will stream on their YouTube channel at 3 p.m.

A release from NHB Guelph said the three groups performing will be the Monday Jazz Improvisation group, the Tuesday Popular Music Ensemble and the Wednesday Little Big Band.

“This past year has been particularly challenging for many community-based organizations, especially those involved in performing music,” said Brent Rowan, musical director for NHB Guelph, in the release.

“Most of our members are Seniors, and keeping people safe through the COVID-19 pandemic has been our top priority. This meant that we could not meet in person.”

The three ensembles have been practicing since October using Zoom for video and another platform called Jamulus for audio.

These platforms were chosen after Rowan experimented with different online platforms to reduce the amount of lag time while allowing performers to stay in sync with each other.

“Most people these days are aware of how Zoom works for seeing groups of people interacting,” said Rowan in the release, “Jamulus allows a group of musicians to play together in ‘real time’ because of its low latency audio.”
