Focus on Nature is pleased to announce the opening of Focusing on Nature: Photography the Natural World, a new exhibit at the Guelph Civic Museum, featuring 80 photos by local young photographers who have participated in Focus on Nature camps and school workshops.

Selected from tens of thousands of photos taken by students in 2017, these eighty images were chosen by Focus on Nature volunteer judges as having special merit.

Photography provides new ways of seeing and understanding our local environment. Today’s technological, urbanized culture meets the natural world in this exhibition of digital photographs created by Guelph youth through Focus on Nature, a local organization that connects kids to nature through photography.

The exhibition includes photographic artifacts from the Guelph Museums’ collection and from private collections. These historical objects combined with the digital photographs tell the story of photographic technology in our ongoing and curious engagement of nature.

There will be a public reception for the young photographers, their families and teachers, exhibit sponsors and museum visitors, at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23. Media representatives are welcome to attend.

“Young people see the world differently than adults and these remarkable images capture their fascination with the natural world in interesting and delightful ways. This exhibit reveals the importance of a healthy child-nature connection. I hope these photos will inspire people of all ages to spend more time outdoors discovering the wonders of the natural world around them,” said Simon Bell, executive director of Focus on Nature.

Location: Guelph Civic Museum, 52 Norfolk St., Guelph
Dates: March 10 - June 10, 2018
Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The exhibit is collaboration between Guelph Museums and Focus on Nature. Focus on Nature is grateful for the support of our exhibit sponsors The Guelph Community Foundation, LinamarSnapd Guelph, and Body of Health. Thanks to their support, each young photographer will be able to take home their professionally mounted photo when the exhibition is over.

Focus on Nature is a non-profit organization based in Guelph, Ont. that connects kids to nature through photography. As a volunteer-driven registered charity, we welcome donations, including equipment and time, to strengthen our program delivery.
