Ontario reports 554 new COVID cases Wednesday

The latest updates noted 770 recoveries and 16 deaths, but five of the deaths occurred more than two months ago

Public Health Ontario reported 554 new COVID cases today for Sept. 7. 

The latest updates noted 770 recoveries and 16 deaths, but five of the deaths occurred more than two months ago. 

The 16 deaths include one person between 40 and 59 years old, nine people between 60 and 79 years old, and six people over 79 years old. 

The Sept. 8 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 319 cases in unvaccinated people (11.1 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people), 56 cases in partially vaccinated people (8.4 per 100,000 partially vaccinated people), and 136 cases in fully-vaccinated people (1.5 cases per 100,000 fully-vaccinated people). The remaining 44 cases were people with unknown vaccination status because of missing health card information.
  • 6,040 active, lab-confirmed cases, down from 6,272 yesterday. 
  • 375 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario. 
  • Of the COVID patients hospitalized and not in the ICU, 162 are unvaccinated, 14 are partially vaccinated, and 28 are fully vaccinated. 
  • There are 167 COVID-positive patients in intensive care, plus another 27 patients who no longer test positive for COVID-19. 
  • 99 COVID patients are on ventilators and another 16 patients on ventilators no longer test positive for COVID-19.
  • Of the COVID patients in the ICU, 113 are unvaccinated, seven are partially vaccinated, and eight are fully vaccinated. 
  • 10,089,234 Ontarians (about 68 per cent of the total population) have been fully vaccinated and another 845,422 (six per cent of Ontario population) have a single dose of COVID vaccine. Approximately 26 per cent of the population is unvaccinated.
  • The province reported 21,840 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 3.3 per cent positivity rate.
  • Provincial labs have processed 17.4 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 149 are from Toronto, 46 are from Peel, 25 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, and 41 are from York Region.
  • Today's new cases include 106 individuals under 12 years old, 74 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 194 people between 20 and 39 years old, 130 people between 40 and 59 years old, 41 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 10 people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 571,332 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 555,723 recoveries and 9,569 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,877.6 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate last week was 35.1 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by six per cent from the week beginning Aug. 23.
