City council is set to decide on Monday whether to lower the speed limit by 10 km/h in 48 neighbourhoods and along 12 sections of arterial road – a move supported, at least in part, by 55 per cent of city residents, based on results from a GuelphToday poll.

The poll, which ran from Wednesday to Friday on GuelphToday.com, collected 383 confirmed local responses – enough to be considered statistically significant based on the city's population of about 135,000 people. It found 31 per cent of people agree with the reduction to both sets of areas, while another 24 per cent agree with reductions in residential areas but not along major roads.

About 39 per cent of local respondents opposed speed limit reductions to both major roads and in residential areas, with another 2.1 per cent supporting reductions along major roads but not neighbourhoods.

More than 825 people overall responded to the poll, though only 383 were deemed to have come from within the community, while others originated from across Canada, the United States and Europe.

We asked, "Do you support a 10 km/h speed limit reduction in 48 neighbourhoods and along 12 arterial roads in the city?"

Here's how people responded:

No to both 38.72 % total, 38.12 % local
Yes to both 29.07 % total, 31.07 % local
Unsure 4.22 % total, 4.70 % local
On major roads, not residential areas 1.93 % total, 2.09 % local
In residential areas, not major roads 26.06 % total, 24.02 % local

This result provides for a 95 per cent confidence level +/- 3.39 per cent margin of error in the local community.
