31 Combat Engineer Regiment, a Reserve Army unit located in St Thomas and Waterloo, will conduct an exercise to remove the Niska Bridge in the City of Guelph from Monday, March 12, to Monday, March 19, 2018.

Preparations for the bridge removal will take place during the week and the dismantling of the bridge on the weekend.

Members of the public will see soldiers dressed in combat uniforms, and a variety of vehicles and equipment used by the unit on and around the bridge throughout the exercise. No weapons will be carried and there will be no use of ammunition or explosives.

Having reached the end of its usable lifespan, the bridge is being removed by the City of Guelph following public consultation and the creation of a plan to replace it with a modern span.

The requirement to remove the existing bridge created a training opportunity for 31 Combat Engineer Regiment and the Canadian Army is working with the City of Guelph on this project.
