10:34 a.m. update:
Guelph Police Service has issued the following statement regarding this morning's incident:
"On Tuesday May 17, 2016 at 1:59 a.m. the Guelph Police became involved in an investigation at the Holiday Inn Express located at 540 SilverCreek Parkway North, Guelph.
The police were responding to a male who had rented a room on the third floor of this hotel, and was causing extensive damage. Attempts by the police to speak with the male were unsuccessful. Police engaged the assistance of their Tactics and Rescue Team to assist with gaining access to the room. Entry into the room was successful, however the male was located unresponsive.
The Special Investigations Unit was notified and have invoked their mandate to investigate this matter further. There will be no further communication by the Guelph Police at this time."

The SIU has released a statement on this morning's investigation into the death of a 25-year-old man at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Silvercreek Parkway North.
The following is the text of the release:

Around 2 a.m. this morning, an employee at the hotel called the Guelph Police Service about noise inside a room. The hotel is located on Silvercreek Parkway North.

The Tactical Unit was deployed.

Close to 4 a.m., officers entered a room.

The body of a 25-year-old man was discovered inside the room.
8:11 a.m. update:
An SIU Forensic Identification Services van and two Guelph Police vehicles are on scene at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites at 540 Silvercreek Parkway North.
No other emergency vehicles are at the site.
7:45 a.m. original story:
The province's Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating a death at a hotel on Silvercreek Parkway.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
So far, no other information has been released.
