For the eighth consecutive year, the University of Guelph has ranked second place for research income in an annual survey of top research institutions across the country, and seventeenth overall – up by one from last year.

But that's not all.

According to the 2022 Research Infosource Inc., who ranks Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, from 2017 to 2021 the U of G:

  • Had the third-highest total research income from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (more than $114 million, worth 14.3 per cent of total research income)

  • Had the fourth-highest research income from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, or just over $17.5 million

  • Had the fifth-highest research income from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research – more than $19 million

  • Ranked eighth overall for 2017-21 research income from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, amounting to nearly $31 million

  • Ranked first in the amount of research income it attracts from the private sector as a percentage of total research income, and second in the amount of research income overall

  • Ranked first in research intensity per faculty member ($216,300) and per graduate student ($60,000)

  • Ranked first in not-for-profit research income growth, which increased more than 45 per cent from 2020 to 2021

The rankings are based on measures like the total sponsored research income, the number of publications in leading journals and the impact the research has.

“Once again, the University of Guelph ranks among the top research universities in Canada, as it has consistently since Research Infosource first began surveying Canada’s research universities over two decades ago,” said vice-president of research Malcolm Campbell in a press release.

“These results reflect our researchers’ engagement with intellectual pursuit and innovation, our institution’s ability to steward lasting research partnerships, and the excellence of our research enterprise as a whole.”
