NEWS RELEASE
UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH
*************************
Due to the forecast of significant, ongoing snow and limited visibility, the University of Guelph has adopted weather-related emergency procedures and is closed today – Jan. 17 – to protect the safety of students, faculty and staff.

Today’s closure means:

  • All classes, labs, tutorials (both in-person and remote delivery) are cancelled; any scheduled exams will be postponed. Instructors: please note that other than during the final exam period, bookings in the Exam Centre need at least seven days lead-time for rescheduling.
  • Employees who are currently working remotely will continue to do so, to the extent feasible. Speak with your manager or supervisor about expectations during today’s closure.
  • Those designated as essential or required employees are required to report to their workplaces.
  • The community COVID-19 vaccination clinic in the W.F. Mitchell Gym will continue as scheduled.

All University buildings and facilities are closed with the exception of emergency services (Campus Safety Office and Fire Safety).

This closure extends to all on-campus community spaces including the:

  • Library
  • University Centre
  • Athletics Centre – except for the community COVID-19 vaccination clinic in the WF Mitchell Gym, which will proceed as planned.
  • Child Care and Learning Centre
  • Ontario Veterinary College clinics (emergency service is still available)
  • Arboretum, and
  • All other campus buildings.
  • Dining facilities in Creelman Hall remain open for students living on campus.

Only those employees who have been notified in advance by their supervisors that they are considered essential workers as per the Hazardous Weather policy are expected to report to work today. For those employees, public transportation is recommended for safety reasons whenever possible.

Those employees designated as essential workers are encouraged to take extra caution when commuting to work. Supervisors of essential workers are asked to be flexible with starting times given the inclement weather.
