The federal government announced Wednesday over $1 billion in funding for research projects across the country, including several investments benefitting the University of Guelph.

More than $275 million in funding will support 5,700 students and emerging researchers across Canada, including over $4 million for nearly 100 U of G graduate students.

Eleven researchers in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, and the Ontario Agricultural College will receive over $674,000 in funding to support the early development of new research projects.

Lastly, over $139 million will be going to 176 Canada Research Chairs across the country, including renewed Tier 1 chair, U of G Professor Susan Brown, and newly-appointed Tier 2 chair, U of G Professor Leah Levac.

Tier 2 chairs are considered to be emerging researchers with the potential to lead in their field, while Tier 1 chairs are considered to be outstanding researchers and world leaders in their fields. For each Tier 1 chair, the institution receives $200,000 each year for seven years; for Tier 2, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, and an additional $20,000 strident for first-term chairs.

Tier 2 chairs award $120,000 each year to emerging researchers for five years, while Tier 1 chairs, deemed outstanding researchers and world leaders in their fields, receive $200,000 annually for seven years.
