The UGDSB budget is approved for the upcoming school year and it includes money for math and literacy from the province.

It was passed at the final board meeting of the end of the 2022/2023 school year on June 27.

The operating expenditures budget is $455,486,186. The capital projects budget is $38,074,756.

The budget aims to reflect pillars of the multi-year plan (MYP). This includes delivering education, inspiring a love of learning, championing well being, leading with sustainability, and ensuring access and outcomes.

“By focusing our investments on Upper Grand students and on the priorities of the MYP, we hope to achieve vision 2026, which is to be recognized as educational leaders in creating unparalleled, agile and inclusive learning experiences for all,” said Ralf Mesenbrink, UGDSB chair, in a press release.

The budget includes spending towards supporting math and literacy. Some of the money comes from the Ministry of Education. The accumulated surplus from the money will address the budget shortfall of $6.5 million.

There was an increase of the Grants for Student Needs from the provincial government, compared to the previous school year the grants were provided. The 2023/2024 grants are an increase of $14.8 million.

In the Priorities and Partnerships Fund, it has additional supports for math, reading, de-streaming and transition into secondary school. It’s an increase of $2.8 million.

Other funding sources decreased because of a lack of intentional student enrolment.
