CENTRE WELLINGTON – Local community members are invited by the UGDSB to the first in a series of meetings aimed at violence reduction and suicide prevention.

“The Centre Wellington community has experienced much loss and tragedy over the past decade, including recent events that have brought the issues of transphobia and homophobia to the forefront,” reads a UGDSB press release.

UGDSB officials will be joined by representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association, Centre Wellington District High School, Family and Children’s Services, the OPP, Compass Community Services and the Wellington Catholic District School Board.

Speaking at the virtual meeting will be Kevin Cameron, a board certified expert in traumatic stress as the executive director for the North American Center for Threat Assessment and Trauma response.

“Kevin Cameron has been a support to the community on multiple occasions in the past and understands the complexities and the traumatic events that this community has experienced,” the release states.

Cameron will speak about collective efforts that can be taken by the whole community to ensure they are free from intolerance, hate and violence to ensure classrooms are safe and accepting.

There will be an opportunity to provide feedback to UGDSB and community partners through an after-event survey.

The virtual event will take place on Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Register in advance for the meeting here
