Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health will soon begin providing third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to individuals most at risk of serious illness.

The third dose will be made available starting on Monday for those who fall into the category of the eligible population, which includes transplant recipients, patients with hematological cancers, patients with hematological cancers and residents of high-risk congregate settings.

Third dose intervals will depend on the timing each person received their second dose and will stretch from a minimum of eight weeks following the second dose up to five months following the second dose.

Transplant recipients, patients with hematological cancers, patients with hematological cancers fall into the earliest third dose availability and can receive the third dose a minimum of eight weeks following your second dose.

Third doses will be offered to residents of high-risk congregate settings, which includes long-term care homes, higher-risk licensed retirement homes and First Nations elder care lodges, a minimum of five months after their second dose.

Third doses for this group will be offered to these individuals in their residence, either within the home or through a mobile clinic, and they can expect to be contacted directly.

On their website, WDGHP said two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine provides strong protection against COVID-19 including against the Delta variant. However, for some key populations, a third dose may be required to boost protection and increase immune response.
