The Guelph Royals are on the verge of getting upset in the first round of the Intercounty Baseball League playoffs.

Game 3 of their best-of-five series against the Hamilton Cardinals goes Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. at Hastings Stadium, with the Cards up 2-0.

The team confirms city workers were able to get the field in playing condition after a morning rainfall came through the area, and things are a go for the do-or-die game for the home team.

Hamilton took the first game 4-3 in Guelph Saturday, and followed it up with a 7-4 decision down Highway 6 Sunday.

If Guelph holds on, the fourth game of the series will go Wednesday in Hamilton.

A date and time for a possible fifth and deciding game in Guelph has yet to be determined.

It's expected Claudio Custodio, an IBL MVP candidate who struck out a league-record 196 batters in 16 regular season starts, will get the ball for the Royals.

He hasn't pitched since last Thursday in the IBL pennant game in London.

Custodio went eight innings, gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits, struck out 10 and walked one in a 4-3 loss to the Royals, forcing Guelph (31-12) to settle for second place and a matchup with the seventh-seeded Cardinals (12-30).

The other three first-round series in the IBL have been determined. London, Welland and Toronto all advanced by sweeping Brantford, Kitchener and Barrie respectively.
