Guelph United will not get to defend their championship title as they missed the playoffs by one point.

The League1 Ontario season concluded on Sunday night with Guelph United being edged out of an extremely close playoff race. Guelph finished the season in seventh place with a 13-5-3 record, only one point behind sixth place ProStars FC. As the top six teams make the playoffs, Guelph will sit out the 2022 postseason.

Despite the disappointing finish to the season, coach Keith Mason is extremely proud of the team. “Our players and staff worked hard to put Guelph United in contention for the playoffs after a rough start to the season, but sadly, it just didn’t work out this year. We are now looking forward to the 2023 season where we hope to bring some more hardware home to Guelph,” said Mason.

The season was an exciting one for the young team as they hosted a Canadian Championship match, welcomed back Svyatik Artemenko from Ukraine, introduced their first Next Generation game, and saw record attendance levels at their home matches.

Guelph United will return to Alumni Stadium in the spring when the League1 Ontario 2023 season kicks-off. Next season will be crucial as all standing points will count towards determining where Guelph United falls when the league splits into three tiers the following year.
