Guelph police report that a Scarborough male has been arrested following an investigation into the theft of nearly $16,000 in jewelry from two Guelph businesses.

On July 27 a male entered a south end jewelry store and asked to see the most expensive gold chain. When an employee removed the $3,000 chain from a display case the male grabbed it and ran from the store.

Nearly three months later, on Oct. 18, the same male entered another south-end store. He asked an employee to look at gold chains and when the case was opened the male grabbed seven chains and ran from the store. They had a total value of just under $13,000. None of the stolen jewelry has been recovered.

Investigators with the Guelph Police Service General Investigations and Special Projects Unit worked with colleagues investigating similar thefts in other jurisdictions.

A 20-year-old Scarborough male was arrested Saturday and returned to Guelph where he is charged with theft over $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing and released Monday. He will next appear in a Guelph court Nov. 23.
