Arrests made after pair seen trying to open car doors

A man and woman were arrested Tuesday following a report of people checking car door handles early Tuesday.

Approximately 5 a.m. police were called about two parties making their way along St. Arnaud Street just west of Downtown Guelph and checking cars. Officers located them near Waterloo Avenue and recognized the woman as being wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court. Both parties were arrested.

During a search incident to arrest, officers located a University of Guelph student card and small can of pepper spray in the woman's purse.

A 26-year-old Guelph woman is charged with attempted theft, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing an identity document, breaching probation and failing to appear in court. She was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.

A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with attempted theft and breaching probation.
