A Guelph man faces arson and other charges after a fire was set Wednesday night outside an apartment building.

Police say that just after 8:30 p.m. several residents called 911 to report a fire in a garden area close to an apartment building on Waterloo Avenue near Wellington Street West. Several small explosions were heard as unknown items were thrown in the fire, which destroyed parts of the garden. No injuries were reported.

Officers arrived on scene and located the man, who was placed under arrest. Investigation revealed he is bound by two different release orders with conditions not to attend that address. A search incident to arrest revealed two knives in the man's possession.

The 36-year-old is charged with arson, mischief to property, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and five counts of breaching court orders. He was held for a bail hearing.
