Bike theft investigations result in drug, fraud charges

On Sept. 18, 2020 at 8:22 p.m., members of the Guelph Police Service High Enforcement Action Team observed an adult male [allegedly] steal a bicycle in the downtown core of the City of Guelph. He was subsequently arrested.

At 9:45 p.m., another adult male was observed stealing a bicycle in the downtown core. He was also subsequently arrested.

A 29-year-old male and a 27-year-old male, both from Guelph, have been charged with:
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Possession of stolen property under $5,000

They will both appear in court on Jan. 8, 2021.

At 10:08 p.m., a third adult male was [allegedly] observed stealing a bicycle in the downtown core. He was also subsequently arrested.

A search incident to arrest revealed:
    •    0.05 grams of red fentanyl
    •    switch blade knife which opens with centrifugal force

Further investigation revealed that on Sept. 16, [it is alleged that] the male had attended six different stores in the City of Guelph where he made seven purchases, totalling $552 worth of merchandise, using a credit/debit card that had been stolen from a vehicle.

It was also discovered that the shoes he was currently wearing were one of the fraudulent purchases. They were subsequently seized.

A 29-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Use of credit card x7
    •    Fail to comply with undertaking – police release x2
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Possession of stolen property under $5,000
    •    Unauthorized possession of a weapon
    •    Possession of a controlled substance

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Sept. 21.
