A Guelph male connected to a burglary by DNA has been arrested.

On June 8, 2020, the owner of a business on Woodlawn Road East near Victoria Road North called to report a break and enter which occurred overnight. Video surveillance revealed a male cut a hole in a rooftop exhaust vent to gain access, causing approximately $6,000 damage.

Once inside he pried open a cash register and stole a small quantity of cash. The male was also observed on video drinking from a juice carton which was later seized by police and submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences. A DNA analysis linked the crime to someone who was in the national DNA databank.

On Thursday evening that male was located in the area of Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue and arrested. A 51-year-old Guelph male is charged with break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, mischief over $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He will appear in a Guelph court July 9.
