A 37-year-old Hamilton man faces charges after fleeing from Guelph police during a January traffic stop. The accused was arrested on Tuesday.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Jan. 14, police on routine patrol pulled into a Speedvale Avenue East parking lot, near Metcalfe Street. As the cruiser entered, a GMC Sierra pickup truck quickly left the lot, a police news release explains.

The officer followed the truck in order to conduct a traffic stop. The driver initially pulled over but then accelerated away at a high rate of speed.

In the interest of public safety, the officer didn’t pursue the truck.

Subsequent investigation led to the alleged driver being identified.

Charges laid include flight from police, dangerous driving and breaching probation.
