A Guelph man faces charges after a pedestrian was struck Sunday evening and the involved vehicle fled the scene.

Police were called just after 6 p.m. to the area of Norfolk Street and Green Street. Investigation revealed a pedestrian walked into the path of a vehicle and was knocked to the ground. The vehicle initially stopped but then left the scene. Witnesses were able to provide a description and licence plate.

The victim was treated on scene by Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Service for lacerations, then transferred to an out-of-area trauma centre for further evaluation.

Guelph police attended the vehicle owner’s address, where they located the vehicle with minor damage and what appeared to be blood on the hood area. The owner was determined to be a prohibited driver as a result of an impaired driving conviction.

A 45-year-old Guelph man is charged with operation while prohibited and failing to stop at a collision causing bodily harm. He will appear in a Guelph court July 15.

Norfolk Street was closed in the area for more than three hours as the investigation continued.
